DIY Costume - Pairs Figure Skating Couple

This costume works well for a solo costume OR a partner costume. In college, I made the costumes for myself and my roommate at the time (Hi, Brittany!) to wear to a Winter Olympics themed party. More recently, I coerced my cute boyfriend into dressing up as the pair for halloween a few years back.

Here's what you'll need:

Male Figure Skater
- Billowy black top
- Black spandex
- Sneakers
- Black tights
- Black fabric

Female Figure Skater
- Black skirt
- Black tank top
- Nude Tights
- Sneakers

For Both:
- Colored Duct Tape
- Plastic Jewels/Rhinestones
- Hot Glue Gun
- Sequined Fabric
- Staples
- Scissors

Instructions (Male Figure Skater):
1. Lay billowy shirt out on floor and cover collar, v-neck, and sleeve cuffs with colored duct tape.
2. Use hot glue gun to glue down rhinestones on one side of color, across shoulder lines, and anywhere else you want to add some pizzaz.
3. Cut two pieces of black fabric to act as bell bottoms for the spandex. The pieces of fabric should look a little bit like this, with the inner hole being wide enough to fit the leg right beneath the knee.
4. Staple bell bottoms so they fit snugly below your knee.
5. Add colored duct tape to the end of the bell bottom to make a colored hem.
6. Cut sash from sequined fabric about 2-3" thick that is long enough to wrap around waist with room for tail. Wrap it around your waist and let the tail hang!

It's all in the details...

Put your sneakers on before putting on the feet of your tights, for the full figure skater effect!

Instructions (Female Figure Skater)
1. Lay your tank top out flat. Using your colored duct tape, make a "V" from the straps down to around the belly button area.
2. Using the hot glue gun, glue rhinestones along the outside of the "V."
3. Cut a rectangle from the sequined fabric that is wide enough to wrap around your waist with a few inches extra and long enough to cover the length of your skirt.
4. Cut 3" thick slits into the long side of the rectangle until you're 2-3" from the top. This will create the sequined skirt topper. Once all the slits are cut, tie the skirt topper around your waist.
5. Use a small scrap of sequined fabric as a hair ribbon for an extra touch.
6. Put your nylons on over your tights for the figure skater look!

Voila! You're done!

xxo,
Kristen

p.s. Posing like a true pairs figure skating couple for every picture you take throughout the night is a great touch.
